My dear friend and regular client, Anja Nel, has been living in the Netherlands for almost five years. Like many South African families who move abroad, she built a new life here for her children and their future. But living overseas often comes with a quiet heartbreak too... Missing family back home.
For many expat parents, one of the hardest parts of life abroad is watching your children miss their grandparents. Young children do not understand distance. They only know they want Ouma or Oupa close by.
So when Anja’s mother, Joanita, came all the way from South Africa to visit them in the Netherlands, it was incredibly special. They booked a family photoshoot to celebrate the visit, but this session was never about perfect posing. The focus was simple... Let the children enjoy time with Grandma.
Let them laugh, play, run, and just be together.
A Natural Family Photoshoot Full of Real Moments
We spent the session outdoors in Woerden, giving the children space to move freely and enjoy every second with their grandmother.
There were kites in the sky, happy laughter, cuddles, and those small in-between moments that often mean the most. Nothing was forced. Nobody had to perform for the camera.
I was just there to quietly document what was already happening naturally, a family enjoying precious time together. These are often the most meaningful photos because they are real.
Why Family Photos Matter So Much
Years from now, these children will look back and remember the visit when Grandma came to the Netherlands.
They will remember flying kites. They will remember laughter in the wind. They will remember being loved.
And their grandmother will have these memories to take home with her too.
